The serial number of Remington rifles will not give you the date of manufacture.
The serial number dates it to 1937, meaning it came out only a year after the 121 started being produced. Apparently he left it to my grandpa but it got put in the attic and forgotten about for 25 years.
This is my Great grandfathers Remington FieldMaster.22 rifle. Each of the 12 months of the year correspond to a letter in the word 'blackpowderx.' For example, 'b' represents January and 'x' represents December. The first letter corresponds to the month. The rifle's serial number contains two letters that denote the month and year of manufacture. Some Remington 550 models have been observed having grooved receivers starting June of 54. 188xxx serial number would put your rifle about 1952 or 53. Even though the 121 was last offered in Remington catalog ApRemington sales records show a few 121 sales in 1956. In that case it is a 4 digit serial number. There is a procedure to get a new serial number assigned, but I think you have to be the original owner and have the original serial number.
